    For the future, in regard to Outlaw/BSP clan(s):
    If you want to keep the mud competitive, cut your numbers - either split off your alliances or get rid of your JV program. You'll see a lot more people playing the mud.

    The wilds that stayed which was a handful of them joined outlaws in the struggle of killing the "maelstrom" that has become of "bsp". Hell I even miss Rurh's 3213213 flaming posts, it kept people interested in mud just to get a chance to kill him! (which wasn't hard, but it just never got old).

    I couldn't disagree more. I think the mud is really healthy right now relative to how it was when there were two 10-man BSP groups running around at the same time killing anyone who had something marginally valuable.

    Now there are a bunch of clans, wars among smaller clans, and a lot more dynamics. If BSP had stayed large and super dominant, killing any clans they felt like, people would not have started playing again, and many more would have quit.

    Text based games don't have a ton of appeal, I don't think you can necessarily say that splitting Mael and Outlaw didn't help the mud because there aren't 200 ppl on daily.

    2 Part post:

    that's an old post indeed. i have not been around, and there are multiple reasons for the absence. first off, having a job really cuts down on the ability to play. factor in a 'war' and the play time becomes non-existent - i'm not going to sit and roll characters or play an unknown unless boredom gets the better of me. secondly i don't see my friends online, so why even bother. the entire reason to play this game is to have fun; once you've played the game at the highest level for years on end the novelty wears off.

    secondly, the mud politics annoy me. people complain of this and that - alliances, unknowns, trash talk - it's hard to find one person thinks rationally! to speak to someone in real life with the same social disregard that exists in arctic could land you in a lot of trouble, and all for no reason. by someone talking trash it doesn't make me think, 'man, i'm going to crush that fool on the battle field'. conversely i think, wow, i must be getting old - so many people arguing in fantasy land about something that doesn't matter! i don't want to participate in those activities anymore.

    when it comes down to it, there are no winners in arctic. you may think you dominate - you have the spells, gear, experience and everything else that establishes you as a good player - but you have no one to play with. i don't blame anyone in particular, maybe myself for outgrowing the desire to play endless hours of mud. it's just how games go - and this game is a lot different from when i started playing. 100 + people with limited knowledge and a hunger to learn is totally different from 40 players with on average a great deal of knowledge. add on to that the inability for groups to propose solutions to mud issues in a mature matter (peace treaties, arranged fights - basically open dialog in a controlled environment) and you have a few reasons why people are not active.

    even if things would change i doubt i would be able to play with the same ferocity that
    i employed in the past. This doesn’t disqualify me from playing, but when it comes down
    to it, i don’t get the same pleasures from playing that i did in the past. I feel that a lot of the people that have played this game for a long time can relate.

    oh yeah, and about arctic's numbers, it's a Text-Based game competing against a multi-billion dollar gaming industry that advertises everywhere. Arctic is a thing of the past, it will never have the numbers it used to, and most likely will not exist in another 5 yrs. Deal with it.

    Mavlad, your response to Al's double-wide post was apropo on so many levels, probably unintentionally so.

    And Al, your post makes a lot of sense, and I also find myself wondering at times whether the sometimes ridiculous extremes of clan politics actually hurts the game or enhances it. Probably a lot of both. But ultimately, part of the reason we mud is to escape to a world where we can completely ignore real world social convention without any discernable consequences to ourselves. In other words, Arctic is a role playing game, and sometimes I just wanna role play a douchebag.
